Option 6 bypasses Northampton Townsite, improves the current NWC Highway and utilises the future ONIC (Oakajee Narngulu Infrastructure Corridor).
-
Option 4 bypasses Northampton Townsite, going on to build a new road through Howatharra, Chapman Valley, parallel to NWC Highway.
-
Option 5 bypasses Northampton Townsite, also cutting a new road (shorter) through Chapman Valley.
Main Roads WA (MRWA) and the Midwest Development Commission currently endorse Option 4.

All Shire Councils affected by the proposed Northampton to Dongara corridor Alignment are in objection to Options 4/5 and endorse Option 6.

-
Upgrading NWC Hwy is a viable option, minimising quality farmland & rural lifestyle property impacted.
-
Option 6 impacts on fewer landowners and minimises land acquisition costs.
-
Option 4 saves only <5km road length.
-
NWC Highway would likely be ‘gifted’ to local Shire Councils should Options 4/5 be constructed. The cost of maintaining this road would fall on landowners, thus increasing rates or reducing other local government works.
-
There is currently no budget allocation for any Options. Endorsement of Options 4/5 would result in current landowners having a line drawn through their property, limiting any development/sales, creating uncertainty and distress. There would be no indication on purchase price, process or which agency is responsible for the acquisition. We do not wish this fate upon any more landowners.
-
Option 6 has been identified in planning documents since the 1970’s. Landowners have purchased property in this region fully aware of future plans.
-
Land either side of the Option 6 is already under State Government ownership for a 10 km section from White Peak Road to Coronation Beach Road.
-
Options 4 & 5 run through two nature reserves that were set aside for rare flora and fauna. The endangered Black Carnaby Cockatoo roosts and forages in these reserves and surrounding farmlands.
-
Option 6 impacts on a lesser area of remnant vegetation as well as impacting on fewer water courses and tributaries, utilizing the existing road reserve where possible.
-
Options 4 & 5 would not provide any linkage and therefore no benefit, until constructed in their entirety.
-
Option 6 can form part of a staged construction process. This would provide more immediate cost benefits and traffic flow management whilst assisting heavy vehicle traffic issues within Geraldton.
-
Option 6 runs directly to our future port rail and industrial area Oakajee Industrial Estate. Option 6 provides greater certainty to potential investment and development in the currently isolated Oakajee Industrial Estate.
-
Option 6 supports the finalisation of the ONIC for landholders who have been waiting over 15 years.
-
The acquisition and construction of either Option 4 or 5 would not preclude the need for Option 6 to still be acquired and constructed to provide a strategic link from the Oakajee Port and Industrial Estate to the Narngulu Industrial Estate, Geraldton Port, iron ore mines to the south east and north east of Geraldton and the wider heavy vehicle and rail network
